Audrey Geary celebrates 100th Birthday

Audrey Geary, a resident at Sharston House Nursing Home celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday 6th February, with a special party, surrounded by family and friends.

Audrey May was born on 6th February 1926 to Herbert (Bert) and Nellie Marker, who had married 1923. Audrey was their pride and joy and they watched her grow into a wonderful, beautiful young lady .

Audrey worked in London as a PA during the war and often witnessed the German flying bombs (known as Doodle Bugs) fly overhead around the Aldwich area and nearby. Audrey would listen for the engine to cut out before it plunged to the ground causing damage to buildings and killing those unfortunate to be in the impact area.

Although there were many suitors for Audrey, a certain determined dashing young chap (John Dennis Geary) swept Audrey off her feet and they were married just under 79 years ago both aged 21. Sadly, John passed away late last year, not long after they celebrated their 78th Wedding Anniversary in style! They were delighted to be interviewed and filmed by Granada Reports on reaching this incredible milestone anniversary and had a wonderful celebrating.

John having flown in the RAF became a pilot in BEA, culminating as a Senior Captain first class flying Tristars (350 seater passenger aircraft) in BA with a career of 29 years.

Audrey travelled extensively around the world with John and raised two children Sylvia and Nick.

Audrey’s focus was bringing her children up while John was away flying often a week or two at a time, this covered all of Sylvia and Nicks school years and more, giving guidance and support to them both. This never stopped even when her children had left home and were married.

Audrey successfully owned and ran a boutique in the late 1960s to early 1970s along with daughter Sylvia.

When John retired from his flying career he and Audrey moved to Loch Goil on the West coast of Scotland. While there Audrey became secretary for the RNLI and helped campaign for John for the position of treasurer for a political party in Argyll and Bute, a position he held for many years.

Audrey has had an amazing life, travelling extensively around the world by both sea and air. Sadly in May 2013 John had a fall in Rhodes where he sustained substantial brain damage. Audrey sat with and helped nurse him every day while he was in hospital in Rhodes until he could be flown back to England.

John and Audrey moved to Mobberley, to be closer to their daughter, Sylvia, where they lived until it became harder for Audrey to care for John at home. They both became residents at Sharston House Care Home, where there love and devotion continued until John sadly passed away.

Audrey’s daughter Sylvia said, “Throughout our lives Mum and Dad have always given their love and support to both Nick and I, through good times and bad.” She continued “Audrey has been a devoted and amazing wife, mother, a wonderful Nannie and an incredible Mother in law and always puts her whole family first. Her love, caring and guidance has always been there for all to experience and see. We wish her a very Happy 100th Birthday.”

Audrey is loved so much by Sylvia, Nick, Barry, Egija and her 3 lovely Granddaughters, Alex, Sara and Kate.

Bindhu Varghese, Manager at Sharston House Care Home said “Audrey is a much-loved resident at Sharston House and it was fantastic to celebrate this milestone birthday with her and her family and friends.” She continued “At Sharston House, we are proud to help residents live active and fulfilling lives, so we always love to celebrate incredible milestones and Audrey’s birthday was no exception.”
