Back to School with Friend in Deed for residents

Back to School for the Elderly at Carbrooke Primary School

A magical morning of intergenerational connections was shared between Primary Schoolchildren and Care home residents proving to be a real treat despite their being 90 years between them.

The visit originally set up by Intergenerational children’s group Founder & Managing Director (charity number1180725) Friend in Deed Kelly Lindsay, was for residents from Buckingham Lodge Care Home in Watton who were invited to spend time with reception children at neighbouring School Carbrooke Primary.

“We were so happy to be able to bring a new school connection to the fabulous residents at Buckingham Lodge” she explains “The first visit of care home residents (including those living with Dementia) was magnificent, it is clear to see why intergenerational connections are essential in our communities” “It’s great to see care homes that are so passionate about their residents wellbeing”

Facilitated by Head teacher Hannah Wheeler the morning was spent colouring in pictures and reading together reading together with the children sharing some of their favourite stories such as Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd.

Followed by an amazing rendition of a song about a Rocket with the children singing and signing in Sign Language led by Mrs Cunningham who was enthusiastically described as “the best teacher, who teaches us Phonics”

“Intergenerational relationships benefit everyone”, said Marcia Hughes Community Engagement coordinator for Kingsley Healthcare (East) “from evoking childhood memories to allowing us to get back in touch with our own inner child, it was a really lovely visit”
