Beth leads Burns Night festivities at Allonsfield House care home

Beth Fairbairn left her home in Ayrshire, birthplace of Robert Burns, at the age of 18 to train as a nurse in Glasgow.

It was where she met her future husband, a medical student, and their union led to a lifetime of travel.

However, she has always been proud to celebrate Burns Night wherever she has been – and was delighted to lead the festivities at Allonsfield House care home, in Campsea Ashe, near Woodbridge.

Mrs Fairbairn, 89, said: “Burns Night is celebrated all over the world, and you will always find a Scottish community who celebrate it, wherever you travel.
“I think drinking is the best part of the celebration. We must remember that Robert Burns was a hard drinker!”
She warned her fellow residents in advance that “haggis is a heavy meal with lots of onion and meat, and best accompanied with a stiff drink”.

Judith Morgan-Worrall, manager of the Kingsley Healthcare run home, said: “It’s been a lot of fun today. It’s so important to keep the residents entertained during this difficult time.

“Beth made a speech and, of course, we ended this special day with a toast for Scotland.”

The residents enjoyed traditional haggis, neeps and tatties and delicious desserts, cranachan and gateau with fresh cream.
