Brackley Care Home couple celebrates 66 years of marriage

While many couples strive to reach their Golden anniversary, Cyril and Shirley Brawn, who now live at Brackley Care Home,  have gone well beyond, celebrating an incredible 66 years of marriage this week. The milestone was marked with a heart-warming day spent surrounded by their loving family.

A Romance Sewn at Denny’s

The couple’s story began in the heart of Northampton’s industrial heyday. They first met while working at Denny’s Clothing Factory, where a workplace friendship eventually blossomed into romance. After some time, Cyril plucked up the courage to ask Shirley to the ‘pictures’—a classic first date that set the stage for a lifetime together.

Following a year-long engagement, the pair wed on January 16, 1960, at Shirley’s local parish, St Leonard’s Church in Yardley Gobion. The bride was attended by three bridesmaids—her sister Yvonne and Cyril’s two sisters—who wore elegant pale blue dresses. Cyril was supported by his brother, Bob, who served as best man. After a joyful reception at the village hall, the newlyweds escaped to London’s West End for a three-night honeymoon, taking in the bright lights of the capital.

Family, Travel, and the Turf

Family has always been at the heart of their 66-year journey. With four children, the couple spent decades enjoying the best of the British seaside, creating lasting memories in Bournemouth and Caister. In later years, they traded the UK coast for the warmer climates of Tenerife, which became their favourite frequent getaway.

Back at home, the couple shared a passionate hobby: horseracing. They were regular fixtures at Towcester Race Course and enjoyed special excursions to world-renowned venues like Ascot.

The Secret to Longevity

When asked the inevitable question—what is the secret to 66 years of wedded bliss?—their answer was refreshingly honest.

"You have your ups and downs, but you work through it," they both agreed.

The mutual respect between the two remains as strong as ever. Shirley describes Cyril as a "good Dad and a hard worker," while Cyril fondly notes that Shirley has been a "very good wife and Mother."

It is sound advice from a couple who have proven that dedication and partnership are the ultimate winning ticket.
