Glowing Care Quality Commission report for Eversley Nursing Home
Home manager Ewa Kujawa said: “We are passionate about providing outstanding end-of-life care at Eversley. We will continue to provide it and hope that is recognised with an overall outstanding rating next time.” Mrs. Kujawa, who finds out later this month (March) in Birmingham whether she is a national winner in the Great British Care Awards, praised the commitment and dedication of her staff in maintaining the home’s CQC good rating. The inspector reports the positive comments of residents who said staff were always respectful towards them. One said, “They are nice, they are lovely,” while another said, “They are all right the staff, they say ‘may I come in and be with you’, they kiss my forehead which is lovely”.
Meanwhile, a family member said, “Great care, the best, they look after my relative well.” The inspector reports: “We observed care and support and saw staff treated people with kindness, dignity and respect. Interactions were consistently positive and it was clear staff had developed good positive relationships with people and knew them well. “We heard staff talking kindly and patiently to people which demonstrated they valued the people in their care.” She observed that in the main lounge there was a memory tree with individual pictures hand drawn of residents who had passed away. “We never forget them,” Mrs. Kujawa told the inspector. The inspector noted that people were supported to eat sufficient amounts and maintain a balanced diet. She said: “We observed that people could eat what they wanted and the cook prepared individual meals depending on what the person preferred to eat.” The report notes that the home was “clean and tidy throughout” and “the premises were decorated attractively with lots of sensory items available”.
People said they felt safe living in the home and the service had an embedded culture of safe handling of medicines, observed the inspector. The report highlights Eversley’s philosophy of keeping people out of hospital and allowing them to die at home with dignity and in line with their preferences. The inspector notes that the home has achieved the highest Gold Standards Framework quality beacon status for its end of life care.
The report describes Mrs. Kujawa as an “effective leader demonstrating a compassionate and caring approach”.
