Kingsley Vegetable Gardening Competition
The residents have been delighted to be involved in the Kingsley Vegetable Gardening Competition and the home quickly decided that a Gardening Club would be perfect as lots of the residents were so enthusiastic and determined that their vegetable garden would be the best - we're not competitive honestly!
The residents have helped paint the planters and even though some had dexterity problems they were determine to contribute. Toilet roll holders were used to help with composting and sowing the seeds and everyone has been waiting with baited breath each day to see the seeds slowing starting to grow.
The residents have been very ambitious and have planted a range of herbs including basil, chives, spearmint, fennel and minted which family members having been using to make mint tea!
Vegetables being grown have included potatoes, cabbage, onions, radish runner beans as well as beetroot which no salad is complete without!
It has been fabulous seeing all the seeds growing and taking a life of their own with the cress definitely ready for those mayonnaise sandwiches!
Raised bedding has been used to help those in wheelchairs be more involved.
The main residents involved were Alma, Molly, Gillian and Audrey who have thrived themselves over the last few weeks along with their vegetables. Audrey was delighted to sample the first strawberry picked.
The Kingsley Vegetable Gardening Competition has certainly given a new lease of life to many of the residents, stimulated lots of conversations and memories of growing vegetables in their younger days as many remember the rationing that took place long after WWII ended. It has been delightful listening to all the stories and laughter from residents, families and staff.
Timperley Care Home have had secret weapon Cheryl, Deputy Manager who is a keen garden who grows lots of her own fruit and vegetables at home involved, offering help and guidance along the way, demonstrating that engaging with meaningful activities is everyone's responsibility not just our wonderful Activity Co-ordinators.
