Memorial fund scores with young people at learning disability home
A memorial fund launched after the tragic death of a teenager has given a boost to the football ambitions of young people at a learning disability home. Gary and Elaine High of Lowestoft started fundraising in memory of son Taylor, 19, who was killed in a car crash in 2011. And when they heard that residents of Decoy Farm in Browston, were in need of football equipment they set to work. With the help of Lowestoft-based sports equipment manufacturer Harrod UK they were able to provide them with goalposts, nets and corner flags. Among those enjoying the new facilities are home resident Robert Bryant who plays for the Norwich FC learning disability team and support worker Christy Finch who plays as a striker for Leiston FC.
Michael Harper, maintenance man at the Kingsley Healthcare-run home and now the partner of Mrs High, said: “The residents approached me to make some goals and I mentioned to Elaine perhaps the Taylor High Memorial Fund could help.” Mr High, who administers the fund with his ex-wife, said: “We asked for donations for a memorial bench at Taylor’s funeral and exceeded the amount we needed by £3,000. We have gone on to raise £92,000 and so far given away £85,000 to good causes, helping the local community.”
Decoy Farm manager Wendy Jack said: “Everyone here is thrilled with the equipment and I would like to thank Gary and Elaine for their kind help.”
