Nurse at Thorp House Care Home raises more than £1,500 on Mighty Hike

A nurse at Thorp House Care Home, near Watton, has completed the Norfolk Coast Mighty Hike in memory of her brother in law.

Ruth Green, 52, of Shropham, walked the 13 miles from Cromer to Blakeney with her niece Lisa Tovell in bright sunshine on Sunday – and was relieved to finish without a single blister.

She said: “We decided to do this fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of my brother in law Paul Green who sadly contracted cancer. He spent the last days of his life in Thorp House and I was on duty when he passed away.”

Mrs Green, who has incorporated walking in her weight loss regime, losing 10st in two and a half years, raised more than £1,500 while her niece raised about £350.

She said: “I would like to thank everyone for their support. My colleagues at Thorp House raised around £200 for me by hosting a Macmillan coffee morning while Daya Thayan, our CEO at Kingsley Healthcare, also kindly pledged a donation.”

She said the walk had been an emotional journey and her niece had been her biggest motivator, especially when she cramped up on the shingle beach at Cley.

Mrs Green, who has worked night shifts at Thorp House for the past five years, said: “The views were amazing. You don't realise how beautiful Norfolk is until you go and explore.

“The shingle beach was, without a doubt, the worst part of this hike. It was three miles long, but it took longer than the first seven miles to complete.”

She said she and her niece had already decided to do another Mighty Hike next year in another part of the country.
