Partington residents enjoy an amazing cinema experience

Residents at Four Oaks Care Home were delighted to be invited to the Northern Light Cinema in Sale for a dementia-friendly screening of ‘Singin’ in the Rain’

The Dementia Friendly Shows are tailored to people living with Dementia and their family member, friend or carer to enjoy a trip to the cinema. The cinema only started the dementia friendly screening in December last year and has already become a regular calendar event for residents at Four Oaks to enjoy.

The screenings are tailored to ensure a relaxed environment by keeping the lights on halfway, the sound lowered and having a half-time interval. All the staff at the cinema have completed Dementia Friend training and are on hand to help.

Annie Woodall, Events and Marketing Manager at The Norrthen Light Cinema said “The response from our audience has been so heart-warming, we’ve seen a variety of people attending and all have fed back that the experience has allowed them to create memories they’ll hold on to forever. Cappuccinos, cakes and popcorn are our most popular concessions order!” She continued “When curating the programme, we have primarily selected older musical films. Music has been proven to be an effective tool for people living with Dementia and so far they have been a great hit with the audience! Our first film was Bing Crosby’s White Christmas (1954), an audience member said her mum had been singing the songs for weeks after!”

Four Oaks Nursing Home believe that residents should remain active members of the community in which they live, enjoying taking trips out and supporting events as it can help bring back wonderful memories and stimulate conversations.

Resident Angela shared, “I’m so glad I came. That was the best film I have ever seen. The dancing reminded me of my childhood- dancing with my father and sisters. Thank you, Chloe, for inviting me. I’ve had the best day ever.”

Resident Lizzy also had glowing feedback, saying, “That was amazing! The songs, the outfits, the dancing- everything was great. Thanks to everyone involved.” She fondly recalled dancing around the kitchen with her husband as the music played.

Chloe Williams, Lifestyle Co-ordinator at Four Oaks Nursing Home said “As always, the cinema offered a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our residents Angela, Margaret, and Lizzy were delighted to settle in with a hot drink and classic cinema popcorn while enjoying the film. Everyone had a fabulous afternoon.” Chloe continue “We’d like to thank everyone at The Northern Light Cinema for their wonderful hospitality and for creating such special, inclusive screenings for us all to enjoy.”

The screenings now take place on the last Wednesday of the month and the upcoming shows include The Wizard Of Oz (1939), Funny Face (1957) and Easter Parade (1948).
