Staff at Willows nursing home, in Shakespeare Road, Bedford, are celebrating their GOOD Care Quality Commission report

Staff at The Willows residential and nursing home, in Shakespeare Road, Bedford, are celebrating their good Care Quality Commission report. The inspector who visited the Kingsley Healthcare run home on April 26 found the service to be good in four out of five categories and good overall. Home manager Cyril Fomonyuy said: “This is a tribute to the dedication and enthusiasm of all my staff. We are passionate about providing the highest quality care and are delighted this has been recognised by the inspector.” The inspector reports that residents were complimentary about the way staff treated them with kindness and compassion. This was also reflected in written feedback from relatives and a local GP.

The report states: “Staff demonstrated a person centred approach in the way they spoke about people and through their actions. For example, one staff member told us, ‘I tell the new carers we do all we can to make this their [the people living at the service] home’.” Staff were seen providing care “in a gentle and reassuring manner”, such as when they used a hoist to support someone to move position. They supported residents to maintain important relationships with those close to them and helped them to maintain their privacy and dignity. The inspector reports that residents, or those acting on their behalf, were encouraged to contribute to the assessment and planning of their care. And staff confirmed that they supported people to have as much choice and control as possible.

The report observes that the home has stepped up its provision of activities, introducing a new activity board, with activities listed three times daily, and recruiting a second activities coordinator. The inspector praises leadership at the home, adding: “We observed the manager to be very focused on the needs of the people living at the service, prioritising their needs over the demands of the inspection.”
