Talk on Bees!
We are very blessed to have our own hive of bees in our garden at Brackley Care Home and beekeeper Simon Lawton ensures that they are kept happy and safe. We talked about our hive and what will be happening next in the life of our bees. He showed us all of the equipment needed for beekeeping and told us about how he is experimenting with honey mixed with horseradish which was delicious.
Around the second week in April some of the bees will emerge to feast on dandelions, rape seed etc. This early honey is nice but as the season progresses the summer honey
is much nicer.

When the swarm carries out their first flight they complete a figure of 8 and go higher and higher and in this way they map out the area so they know where the hive is.
Bees have 5 eyes, two that they see with and three which are photo receptors with which they can “see” the sun through the clouds.
Thank you Simon, we love learning about bees and how incredibly important they are to the planet.
