The manager of Eversley nursing home in Great Yarmouth is celebrating a top award for the quality of their end of life care. The home in North Denes Road has become one of only four across the region to achieve beacon status for the coveted Gold Standards Framework (GSF) quality hallmark award. The Kingsley Healthcare-run home has focused on end of life care for five years and first achieved GSF recognition in 2013. In its latest GSF assessment, covering every aspect of end of life care, from accurately assessing residents’ changing needs to providing quality support for the whole family, Eversley was awarded a perfect 50 marks out of 50. Manager Ewa Kujawa, pictured with the award she received at a ceremony in Birmingham on April 8, said she was passionate about providing the best end of life care.

Eversley’s residents are being supported with a range of conditions from advanced cancer and Parkinson’s disease to late-stage dementia. However, there is a reassuring feeling of serenity and positivity that embraces everyone in the home. Ms Kujawa said: “We don’t treat death and dying as a taboo. Before clients come I have chatted with their family and explain our philosophy of care.

“We celebrate life here and count it by the minutes, hours and days. “We don’t make big plans that are unrealistic. We are honest but happy for every minute of our residents’ lives.” She said it was about providing the best possible quality of life for people right up to their death and then continuing support to the family. “We do everything to ensure that people can spend their last days surrounded by their family and people who know them. And to make that happen we work with all the professionals, including GPs, as a multi-disciplinary team,” she said. The latest award comes only months after Eversley received an overall good rating in its Care Quality Commission report.
