Primary school pupils have brought joy to the residents of a Suffolk care home with their bright, rainbow-themed poems.

More than 80 children from Eyke Primary School, near Woodridge, took part in a poetry challenge set for them by Allonsfield House care home, in Campsea Ashe.

They were asked to write poems about rainbows, the universal and positive symbol of the pandemic.

The two winners, who win book vouchers to celebrate this month’s World Book Day, were Rayer Horwood, five, and nine-year-old Toby Ward.

Rayer writes in her poem, Ride on a Rainbow, “I wish I could ride a rainbow to the blue sky to see my nanny,
“We would play in the clouds, ride pink unicorns, meet friendly purple dragons, eat a big strawberry, drink orange juice, smile at the yellow sun…”

Toby writes in his, The Beauty of a Rainbow, “Nature’s beauty in all its splendour, giving light in dismal times,
“The colours as radiant as a flower, no end, no start but always bearing joy,
“As cherished as a diamond, and as beautiful as a sunset…”

The poems were judged by staff and residents at the home and the standard was so high they decided to pick two winners.

Allonsfield House manager Judith Morgan-Worrall said: “In more normal times, our residents enjoy frequent visits by local schoolchildren and the pupils of Eyke Primary School brought their musical talent to the home at Christmas.

“We had a fantastic response to our competition. The poems have been displayed in the home for both the residents and staff to enjoy; the cheerful rainbow poems have certainly lifted our spirits.

“The home would like to say a huge thank you to all of the children for bringing such joy to the residents with their beautiful poems and art work – they are truly stunning.”
