Sharston House joins campaign to make Knutsford dementia friendly town

pcso

People will learn how they can play a part in making Knutsford a dementia friendly town during a talk at Sharston House nursing home, in Manor Park South, on Thursday, February 22. The talk, beginning at 10am, will be led by Dementia Friends champion Amy Caves and PCSOs Courtney Nancollas and Zoe Cox who are involved in the campaign to make Knutsford a dementia friendly town. The presentation will be the highlight of the home’s monthly coffee morning, the Sharston Coffee Club, relaunched for the New Year and being held from 10am to 12.30pm on the last Thursday of every month.

PCSO Nancollas said: “Throughout our roles as PCSOs we met many individuals with dementia and decided it was time that Knutsford began to raise awareness and become a dementia friendly town.” She said they had already held their first of what will be monthly steering group meetings to discuss action plans for different businesses around the town to help them take steps to become more dementia friendly. She said: “In our presentation at Sharston House we will be talking about how ordinary people can become part of the initiative. One way involves individuals completing a dementia friendly session which qualifies them to be a dementia friend.”

Nishi Gottlieb, manager at Sharston House, said: “Many of our residents are living with dementia and we appreciate how important it is to foster a wider understanding of the condition in the community.” She said inviting local people to the Sharston Coffee Club was an important way of keeping the home at the heart of the community. The aim is that each month there will be a speaker talking about topics of interest to older people – as well as an opportunity to enjoy a chat over coffee and cakes.

Anyone who thinks they would make a good speaker in future months is asked to contact activities coordinator Stacey Hinton at the home on 01565-633022.
