Staff at a care home in the heart of the Broads are holding a fundraising event for a charity close to the hearts of residents. Heron Lodge, in Norwich Road, Wroxham, is inviting pensioners to a tea party with entertainment on Tuesday, January 12 and is holding a voluntary collection for the Nancy Oldfield Trust. The Neatishead-based charity offers trips on the Broads to disabled and disadvantaged people of all ages and their regular visitors include elderly people with dementia, a condition affecting many of the residents at Kingsley Healthcare run Heron Lodge. Home manager Jo Kennedy said: “We are very close to the river here and last summer our residents thoroughly enjoyed going out on the Broads on a boat trip.

“The Nancy Oldfield Trust does an amazing job and I’m hoping some of our residents will be able to go out with them in the future.” The idea of hosting the tea party, which will include entertainment from Class Act, a singing duo, is to give local elderly people and their carers something to look forward to in the cold days of early January. She said: “Christmas and the new year can be a lonely time for elderly people, especially if they are on their own.” The event will run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. All elderly people are invited although those requiring the assistance of carers are asked to take them along too.

Trust administrator Caryl Wright said: “We are delighted that Heron Lodge has decided to support us. “Many elderly people enjoy coming out with us on our heated boats and I’d like to visit the home and offer their residents a free trip.” She said the trust had bursaries that enabled it to support the cost of trips for people who could not afford it. CEO of Kingsley Healthcare Daya Thayan said: “It is important for our residents to feel connected to the local community so we love to support causes like the Oldfield Trust. Nancy “As well as any money raised at the event we will be making our own donation as well.”
