100th birthday at Kirkley Manor nursing home

“Good genes, of course, but, most of all, living a simple life and working hard,” said her proud son Terry, 74. He said his mother was content to have lived in Lowestoft all her life and was fond of saying: “I would not want to live anywhere else.”

Growing up in the town’s Love Road Audrey recalled her mother taking in Scottish fisher girls who always brought home herring for tea. After leaving school at 14, she had a succession of jobs during her working life, including spells at Green’s the printer’s, the Co-op canning factory and Lowestoft Technical College. As activities coordinator Carole Cook joined relatives and friends for a special birthday tea, she said: “Audrey still has a wicked sense of humour and comes out with some great one-liners!”
