However, the club which meets at the Kingsley Healthcare-run home in Wood Lane from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday mornings, has proved equally popular with members of the local community – many of whom are far younger than the residents. Ms Fraser said: “At our last session, we had about 10 people from the local community, including one lady in her 20s.

“Crochet is no longer just an activity for the older generation, it has become quite an activity for hipsters these days.” She said she had taken up crochet two years ago and was now able to make all kinds of things, from brooches to Christmas trees and Christmas stockings. She said: “The great thing about our club is that it is friendly and everyone has a chat and a laugh. “That’s very different to the group I joined when I started, I am quite outgoing but no one spoke to me!” She said anyone was welcome to come along and free tea and coffee was provided – they welcomed knitters as well.
